Give an Hour Partners with LHI

LHI is proud to announce a new partnership with Give an Hour™, a non-profit organization that provides behavioral health services to Service members and, free of charge. Aimed at improving the availability and quality of behavioral health services for Service members, the partnership allows Give an Hour™ to tap the marketing expertise and organizational resources at LHI to reach a wider audience of potential volunteer providers. At the same time, the arrangement allows LHI to extend an opportunity to Give an Hour™ volunteers to deepen their commitment to Service men and women by joining LHI’s nationwide provider network.

“Nearly 2 million troops have been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan thus far and all of them will return with some level of stress from what they experienced,” says Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, President and Founder of Give an Hour™. “It’s estimated that their experience will also affect at least 10 people within their social networks—spouses and significant others, children, mothers, fathers, and friends—which means some 20 million people right now could potentially benefit from access to mental health services.”

Founded in 2005, Give an Hour™ has created a network of volunteer mental health professionals pledging an hour a week of their services, free of charge, to members of the military—including active duty, reserve, and guard—Veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq, their families, and their communities. Services range from one-on-one counseling to substance abuse treatment, addressing the many needs of the individuals and families of the armed services. The approximately 5,600 licensed mental health professionals working with Give an Hour™ have contributed nearly than 39,000 hours as of May 2011 to support troops and their families. These volunteers include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, pastoral counselors, and other mental health professionals. Providers are located across the country—in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam.

LHI shares the same deep-seated commitment Give an Hour™ has to Service members who encounter difficulties post-deployment. LHI providers help identify potential Post Traumatic Stress, behavioral health, and chemical dependency issues and refer Service members in need of follow-up care. Last year alone, LHI identified more than 300 Service members who indicated they had immediate plans to harm themselves or others, and referring these Service members potentially saved hundreds of lives.

“We are proud of the opportunity to bring the military and mental health community together as we strive to provide critical services to these deserving men, women, and families,” notes Dr. Van Dahlen.

LHI is a proud supporter of Give an Hour™. Service members seeking treatment can locate Give an Hour™ volunteer providers in their area through the Give an Hour™ website.
