David Tornberg, M.D., MPH

David Tornberg, M.D., MPH, is Chief Medical Officer for LHI and a member of LHI’s Strategic Advisory Committee. He also serves as the Medical Director for the World Trade Center National Health Responder Program. In this role, he is responsible for meeting the ongoing health care needs of rescuers and volunteers residing outside the New York area who responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Dr. Tornberg has most recently worked in various senior-level posts with the United States Department of Defense. These roles have included Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Clinical and Program Policy and Chief Medical Officer and acting Deputy Director for TRICARE Management Activity, a military health care plan. Prior to his arrival at the Pentagon, he served as Medical Director for Newport News Shipbuilding, with responsibility for the occupational health of the 18,000 employees of the nation’s largest private shipyard.

Dr. Tornberg is a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of both the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in several commands before leaving to pursue his medical career. Dr. Tornberg has a Master’s degree in Public Health from the Medical College of Wisconsin and a Doctorate in Medicine from Columbia University.
